Some of the greatest, and often simplest, lessons in life can be found in nature. Nature shows us that everything is constantly in motion. Life is movement. Once you start paying attention, you see movement everywhere, both inside and around you. Even things that seem immobile on the surface are in motion—whether it’s the tectonic plates forming mountains or atoms vibrating to create the illusion of solid matter. From great galaxies to the smallest particles, everything turns, spins, or vibrates. Whether or not you perceive this movement depends on your perspective in time and space.
Take the stars, for example. Their slow rotation was once imperceptible to humans, but as we began to grasp the universe’s vastness and age, we learned to observe and map their movements. Similarly, massive objects like mountain ranges are formed by the slow but persistent movement of Earth’s layers over millennia. On the atomic level, everything moves so quickly that it creates the illusion of solidity. The building blocks of our physical world are mostly empty space where particles move so rapidly that they seem immobile from our perspective.
Life is movement. This simple but profound lesson was taught to me by Mario, an osteopath who once treated me. He emphasized that movement isn’t just essential for our limbs but for our organs, too. When movement is blocked—whether physically or internally—symptoms arise. Everything moves, he said, as he massaged my intestines. I could feel, quite literally, what he meant.
Moving your body is not just healthy; it’s essential. When we stop moving, creating, and becoming, we get stuck—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Life is full of movement in all forms: we experience emotional, mental, and spiritual shifts in waves and cycles. Growth and transformation are natural parts of this movement, and we pass through many stages of development over our lifetime.
In many holistic practices, movement and dance are used to facilitate this natural process of becoming. From Tai Chi and Yoga to Five Rhythms and Ecstatic Dance, people move because movement is who we are. I’m particularly drawn to moving to groovy rhythms and beautiful music, which happens to be the perfect doorway to growth and transformation for me.
Movement is embedded in us on every level—mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. When we stagnate or resist movement in any of these areas, symptoms of illness or imbalance appear. Physical stagnation may lead to stiffness and discomfort, while mental and emotional stagnation manifests as stress, anxiety, or depression. Spiritual stagnation can leave us feeling purposeless or unfulfilled.
Movement, in all its forms—whether physical exercise, creative expression, introspection, or spiritual practice—honors your natural state of becoming. It creates the space for growth, healing, and transformation. This dynamic flow keeps you aligned with your true self, promoting vitality and well-being.
